Honoring the legendary Judith Jamison this #BHM

Judith Ann Jamison (1943–2024) was a visionary dancer, choreographer, and leader in modern dance. She made her New York debut at just 21 and became a global icon through her unforgettable performance in Cry—a tribute to the endurance of Black women, choreographed by Alvin Ailey.

Joining the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in 1965, she danced with legends like Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gregory Hines, leaving an indelible mark on the world of dance. After serving as the company’s principal dancer until 1980, she later became its artistic director (1989–2011), shaping generations of dancers.

Her contributions earned her the Kennedy Center Honors (1999), the National Medal of Arts (2001), and the Handel Medallion (2010)—cementing her place in history as a true trailblazer.

Her artistry, leadership, and passion for dance will forever inspire. Rest in power, Judith Jamison.

Honoring the incredible Michaela DePrince this #BHM. ✨

Michaela Mabinty DePrince (1995–2024) was a Sierra Leonean-American ballet dancer whose resilience and talent broke barriers in the world of classical ballet. From overcoming unimaginable hardships as a war orphan to gracing stages with the Boston Ballet, Dance Theatre of Harlem, and Dutch National Ballet, her journey was nothing short of inspiring.

Rising to fame in First Position (2011), she went on to become the youngest dancer at the Dance Theatre of Harlem and later made history with the Dutch National Ballet. Beyond dance, Michaela co-authored Taking Flight and served as a War Child goodwill ambassador, using her voice to uplift others.

Her legacy lives on through the artistry, strength, and hope she shared with the world. Rest in power, Michaela

Join us for one or both weeks of Musical Theater Camp, where young performers train with professional teachers in acting, voice, and dance! Campers will explore the performing arts in a fun, nurturing, and artistically challenging environment, building confidence and skills through engaging games, exercises, and technique classes.

Each week, students will learn music and choreography from different Broadway musicals, culminating in an exciting performance at week’s end! 🌟

Dance Camp: Move, Create, Perform!
For rising 1st-5th graders, our Dance Camp is the perfect way to explore Modern, Ballet, Jazz, and Musical Theater while building confidence and creativity! Campers will also dive into Composition class, where they’ll experiment with movement and design their own dances.

In honor of #BHM, we are spotlighting influential

In honor of #BHM, we are spotlighting influential figures in dance.

Asadata Dafora (1890–1965) was a trailblazer in bringing authentic West African culture to U.S. audiences. At a time when African dance was virtually unheard of in the States, his work opened doors for the study of cultural dance and performance.

Originally from Sierra Leone, Dafora arrived in the U.S. in 1929 and later formed Shogola Oloba, a troupe dedicated to movement-based dramas inspired by West African myth and lore. He was the first known artist to present authentic African dance outside a tribal setting, influencing future legends like Pearl Primus. Let’s celebrate his legacy and the rich traditions he helped share!

Join us for a fantastic evening of dance featuring performances by our talented pre-professional dancers from the Master Class and the Steffi Nossen Dance Company at our Community Concert ! This family-friendly event, is in honor of alumnae Meredith Weddle, has been a tradition since 1965 and an important part of the Steffi Nossen Mission and Outreach Program allowing children and adults the equal opportunity to attend a live dance performance and be part of an exciting evening of dance and artistic expression.
